How to upload flickr photos on Wikimedia Commons

1.  Make sure you are logged in to Wikimedia Commons.
2.  Go to Flickr Upload Bot.  Enter your Wikipedia username and URL of the flickr image.
3.  Click Next.
4.  You will be redirected to Wikimedia Commons.  Save the page and look for “click this link” to complete the upload, and click.
5.  You will be again redirected to the Flickr Upload Bot.  You are done.  Your image is now on Wikimedia Commons.

Note:  You can upload any image, your’s or others’, that has Commons compatible license, i.e. CC-BY or CC-BY-SA, and there are millions of such.  Give it a try.  Do tell me your experience 🙂

Why donate images to Wikipedia?

Have you ever noticed the images in Wikipedia articles, the images that help us to understand the topic better?  If you’re a blogger and need a free image for your latest post, you often turn to Wikipedia.  Or if you use Zemanta, you get images suggested that are often via Wikipedia.  Have you ever wondered from where does Wikipedia get these images?  These images are donated by common people, like you and me, to Wikipedia in order to illustrate the most comprehensive encyclopedia ever!
